08/03/2008 - The Teardown Continues

I pondered for a week or so as to what to do about getting the engine and transaxle out of the car. The builder used steel rod to basically construct a steel cage around the mechanical parts, and welded sheet metal to it. I debated cutting off the front end, and reconnecting it later, but that looked to ruin a lot of the structural integrity. So, I have decided to do my best to disassemble the car with the front end attached. Since so much of it is welded together, I will not be able to completely disassemble the body like I did my KR200 before sandblasting. Hopefully I will be able to get the sand out of the pedal mechanisms ok. Anyway, below are some pictures of what is going on.

The above picture shows the steel rod that was used to build a cage around the homebuilt section of the car.

This picture shows how the builder hooked up the gas pedal of the KR200 to the DKW engine. More details as I continue to tear it apart. Also notice the piece of wood sticking out of the inlet. Now that is hi-tech!

Here is the front of the engine with the radiator out. I think that is a home-made cooling fan set-up. I took the rubber cover off of the points, and they look nice and clean! Maybe the only thing on this car. The guy that built this ent a little crazy with the welding. Four bolts holding on the fan, and he welded the bottoms of the brackets together too!

When pulling the upper readiator hose off, the upper spout fell off. Oops. Bet the radiator shop can fix it. I think this is a DKW radiator. Anyone able to tell?

Uh-oh. Lots of crud in the cooling system. Here is a picture from the side with the generator, water pump and cooling jacket off. I also cut through the bolts holding on the side pipe and removed the exhaust manifold. Does anyone know what the pipe on the top is for? On some pictures I have seen it looks like the fan the the generator run off of it, but this engine is not configured like that. What the heck is this engine out of anyway?

Box of parts that have come off the car so far. I am pretty sure I will replace all of the nuts and bolts when putting this together. I think that is asbestos on the lower radiator hose. Where do you find a replacement for a hose like this?
